Asparagus

A rainy week, but we have some asparagus!!

This has been one of our more challenging weeks for picking. We have had over 2.6" of rain in the last 5 days and our field is very muddy. We have put snow chains on the tires of our picking aids to help them move through the mud. The sad news is that aspragus does not grow as well in the cold so our supply will be a little limited this week. We are really hoping that we get an amazing picking tomorrow, but the forecast is for cool with showers, so we will see!!

We will be at both the Old Strathcona (in front of the concession) and Downtown (we have moved to the south end of the market) Farmers Markets.

Picture is of Doug, myself (Elna), Keri & Randy in front of our farm store at our first annual Asparaguds Festival last weekend.

Our first annual Asparagus Festival was a huge success!!

Last weekend we celebrated our first annual Asparagus Festival in the rain. We made some last minute rain alterations and had a great time touring people to our field.

We were thrilled to have distinguished chefs at our farm!!
On Saturday we were very honoured to have Scott, the head chef from "THE" River Cafe in Calgary at our farm cooking our Asparagus on an open campfire and serving it with delicious sauces  prepared expecially for our event. On Sunday we had Sue, the chef  from Infuse Catering BBQ'ing up delicious tastings of our asparagus for all to enjoy.

Our Petting Zoo was a hit with the young and the old!!

Our long time friend, employee and neighbor, May French, very kindly looked after our petting zoo for our event and educated everyone about the animals. On a side note we had a pot bellied  pig escape from the barn Sunday evening and in an attempt to regain his freedom he ran to the west of our farmyard with five of us in hot pursuit. How can a baby pig with 4" long legs manage to outrun and outsmart 5 grown adults!!!! We did manage to corner him and return him to his rightfull owner, Sybille Gustafson, back to his comfortable barn and family. Thank Goodness!!

See you all on Saturday!!
